Linfield’s European adventure ended in the cruellest fashion on Tuesday night as Nomme Kalju scored an injury-time winner to knock the Blues out of the Europa Conference League on aggregate.
What happened at Windsor Park?
With just 11 minutes played, Ethan McGee powered home from Adam Frizzell’s corner to level the tie on aggregate. But McGee’s night turned sour soon after when he handled in the box and was sent off on 25 minutes. Olksandr Musolitin converted the penalty, though Chris Johns saved the first attempt before Musolitin tapped in the rebound.
Kieran Offord came off the bench at half-time and restored Linfield’s lead on 49 minutes with a smart finish after a Dane McCullough throw. The Blues dominated after the break but couldn’t break down Kalju’s defence. Then, in the 90th minute, substitute Mihhail Orlov smashed home to end Linfield’s campaign.
Why it matters for Linfield
The defeat means Linfield exit Europe at the first hurdle, with a 3-2 aggregate loss to the Estonian side. The Blues had started brightly at Windsor Park and looked like they could force extra-time, but Orlov’s late strike ended their hopes.
League standing: Linfield sit 4th in the Premiership with 62 points from 33 games, 11 points behind Larne. Their recent form reads WLLLW, and they sit on a two-game winning run after beating Dungannon Swifts 3-1 on 12 May 2026.
What comes next?
Linfield now turn their focus back to the Premiership as they chase Larne in the title race. Nomme Kalju advance to face Shelbourne in the second qualifying round.
Meanwhile, Glentoran’s European run ended with a 2-0 loss to RFS in Latvia. Declan Devine’s side needed a miracle after losing the first leg 2-1 at the Oval, but Modou Saidy’s early goal and Janis Ikaunieks’s strike in the 60th minute sealed their fate.
